How to Create the Perfect Tablescape

When it comes to hosting a memorable gathering, it's not just about the delicious food and great company; the ambiance you create with your table setting can truly elevate the experience. If you are wondering how to create a tablescape or if you need tablescape ideas for fall, Thanksgiving, or even Christmas, keep reading! In this blog we share all of our tried and true tips that will help you create a perfect tablescape that will be sure to impress your guests.

Start with Layering

Layering is the first step in creating a visually appealing tablescape. Start with a solid foundation – a tablecloth or table runner that complements your theme and color scheme. For a rustic and natural look, consider using a cotton or flax tablecloth.

To add depth and dimension to your table, we love placing chargers beneath each dinner plate. These can be made of jute, rattan, or any other material that fits your aesthetic. Then place a dinner plate atop the charger to add depth and create a striking contrast against the charger's texture or color. Next, we add a napkin, folded in half in the center of the plate. Choose a napkin with a color that is subtle, yet still festive and represents the season. Lastly, we love to add a decorative element that also serves as a name placeholder. For example, this year we added a wooden pear with a name tag tied onto the top. This adds an organic, personalized element to each setting.

Create Height and Balance

The centerpiece is the focal point of your tablescape, so it deserves special attention. Opt for a statement piece that commands attention, such as a large live floral arrangement in a vase or pot. We like to create height in the center of the table, and then work our way down to level everything out. Surround the centerpiece with smaller accent pieces to balance the visual appeal. Consider using items like decorative pumpkins for a festive touch, candlesticks to provide warmth , or serveware, to add a touch of functionality.

Add a Variety of Textures

Texture plays a pivotal role in creating the perfect tablescape. We recommend incorporating various textures throughout your setup. As mentioned earlier, you can start with a cotton or flax tablecloth as a base. A jute or wood charger offers a natural, woven texture that contrasts nicely with the softness of the tablecloth and the stoneware plate on top.

To further enhance the textural diversity, include wooden elements like decorative pears or name placeholders. In the Harvest Collection tablescape we created this year, we also included our rope pumpkins which added an extra layer of texture. Using all of these different elements gives your tablescape height and dimension and adds interest to the overall look.

Use Functional Decor

A truly perfect tablescape doesn't just look good; it's also functional. Incorporate decorative pieces that serve a purpose beyond aesthetics. For instance, a beautiful stoneware bowl can double as a serving dish for salad or sides, while an elegant pitcher can hold water or a refreshing beverage for your guests. You can also add things like aesthetic salt and pepper shakers or butter dishes. These functional items add a practical dimension to your table, making it visually stunning, yet still useful.
