Rug 101: Expert Tips for Choosing and Maintaining Your Rugs
Rugs can transform a room, adding warmth, texture, and style. Here are some of our favorite tips on how to scale your rugs, choose the right type, and ensure they stand the test of time.
Scaling a Rug
Choosing the right rug for your space is pivotal. An undersized rug can make the room feel small and your furniture unbalanced. In bedrooms, let the dimensions of your bed guide you. For a queen bed, an 8x10 rug works well, while a king bed pairs nicely with an 8x10 or 9x12 rug. Our preference is to keep nightstands off the rug for a balanced look.
In great rooms, going larger than you think will make the space feel grounded. We recommend placing the front legs of every furniture piece on the rug. Another option is to have all furniture completely on the rug for a cohesive look.
For dining rooms, our rule of thumb is to go at least 2 feet larger than the dining table in every direction.
Rug Pads
Using a rug pad is essential for creating a luxurious feel by absorbing the shock of foot traffic and prolonging the life of your rug. Rug pads are often overlooked but important elements of design. They enhance the look and feel of your rug while increasing its lifespan. On hardwood flooring, we recommend a cushion and grip combo that adds thickness and comfort. Rug pads can be trimmed to size, so you can order a size up if you have a custom rug size. They are available online from retailers like Amazon or Rug Pad USA. On carpets, we like Capel grip pads, which secure the rug and prevent bunching around furniture legs.
General Rug Care Tips
To ensure your rug stands the test of time, rotate it 3-4 times a year to prevent uneven wear. When vacuuming, use the highest pile setting and move in long lines, as though mowing a lawn, avoiding back-and-forth motions. Hand-knotted wool rugs like our Knotted Lesley Rug or Dorothy Rug are our favorite due to their durability and how well they clean up.
